Zac Efron Channels Ted Bundy in New Netflix Movie Out Today

As branding goes, being the “Ted Bundy programming service” might seem like a dubious title. Yet Netflix continues to mine that vein with “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile,” a movie that stars Zac Efron as the notorious serial killer, and Lily Collins as the woman with whom he was involved.

The much anticipated Netflix flick, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, starring Zac Efron was made available to stream on Friday, May 3rd. The movie comes on the heels of the wildly popular Netflix doc, Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes. The film has been a hot topic since the announcement of Efron’s casting, leading many to speculate that the film was trying to glamorize the murderer. Efron himself, defended his role, by reminding people that Bundy, himself, was handsome, self-assured and, often, cocky. He was manipulative and Zac Efron plays the part perfectly.

While we’ve gotten used to Bundy docs that show us how heinous and horrendous his crimes were, this movie paints a more human picture of the killer, a love-story, if you will, of his complicated relationship with his wife, Elizabeth Kloepfer, played by Lily Collins, and named Liz Kendall in the movie. As we watch,  Bundy gaslit and manipulated everyone around him. As he’s put on trial, legions of women, while still scared of the psychopath, were also drawn to him because of his good looks and charm.

It was an unexpected film. A film that shows those moments when investigators and detectives across many states begin to put together missing puzzle pieces. And all the while, you continue to wonder how anyone could do what he could do and get away with it.

The movie is streaming now on Netflix.
